The Room

The Room

'It is kind of an adventure to be locked up all on your own in any measurement room' says the nameless narrator of Hubert Selby Jr.'s moment novel. What follows is a startling sequence of reminiscences and fantasies that light up the workings of a prisoner's unhinged brain. He yearns for his violent early life, rages opposed to imprecise experts, and imagines enacting terrible revenge on those that imprisoned him. The prisoner's remand cellphone turns into the scene of a surreal psychological torture. Disorienting, nightmarish and structurally artistic, "The Room" is a surprising exam of the anguish people can inflict on one another.
